Throwback Thursday: Glenelg

Glenelg (spelt backwards is Glenelg) was where that the good ship Buffalo, commanded by Captain (later Governor) John Hindmarsh, landed with the state’s first settlers. All were free people, for it’s South Australia’s proud boast that it was never a penal colony. It might have become the capital of South Australia, but surveyor Colonel William Light had other ideas, and established the city of Adelaide.

Nowadays, Glenelg is a beach suburb of Adelaide, from where it’s easily reached by a broad highway, or a bus or tram ride.

As well as the usual beach activities, it’s possible to visit Buffalo … although whether it’s the ‘original’ or a replica, I never found out.
