The Blue Route

Albufeira: 9th September 2020

The hop on/hop off bus time-tables seem to be a bit of a moveable feast at the moment. We rode the ‘Red Route ‘ on Monday, and today we did the ‘Blue Route ‘ … when it finally arrived.  Because tourist numbers are low on account of COVID19, the frequency has been reduced to a bus every 2 hours, which makes rather a nonsense of the hop on/hop off concept.

The city isn’t all that interesting; after all, there’s really little here that’s more than 50 years old. Except the Old Town, where we stopped just long enough for the bus to negotiate a rather tight roundabout.  We were told Albufeira is sometimes known as the city of roundabouts; maybe the town planners of Swindon holidayed here once?

They took us out to Vilamoura; which struck us as a sort of ‘if you have to ask how much, you can’t afford it ‘ kind of place. My first thought was ‘God! They’ve taken us to the Old Folks Home!’ It’s a complex of hotels, leisure centres and holiday apartments. Some of them looked quite nice, although a little bit too well manicured for me.  Some of them gave me the thought that the architect should go back to designing wedding cakes.

All the time the audio guide kept warbling on, extolling the virtues of the hotels, the leisure facilities and the golf courses. And, I thought … if this course is so popular, how come nobody’s playing on it?

The tour was nothing like as interesting as yesterday’s jeep safari. But, at least the seats were more comfortable!
