The Great Escape

Gatwick: 5th/6th September 2020

Finally, we’re on the move! We took a fairly uneventful drive to Crawley to overnight before a flight from Gatwick to Portugal in the early morning.  It went to worms slightly at the hotel. The dining room was closed … and we’d booked for dinner with them! But, there was an excellent pub just down the road; friendly and welcoming and serving one of the best beef and ale pies I’ve ever tasted.  Early to bed. We have a very early start in the morning.

There was, of course, a rather tedious wait at Gatwick; it usually is first thing in the morning. In order to ensure the appropriate distancing, the boarding was more regimented, and therefore much more orderly than it usually is. This is, I think, something that should remain in force permanently. Everyone wore face coverings on the flight, and some seats were left empty. They said this was to ensure social distancing, but I couldn’t fathom how that worked.

We had to fill in a ‘Passenger Location Form’ before landing  but on the ground at Faro, we just went through almost as normal. We were expecting some health checks, but none were immediately obvious. I do, however, suspect we were surreptitiously scanned by a thermal imaging camera, or something like that … there was a device that looked like a mini camera on a pole by the exit, which flashed a green light as people passed.
