Whenever I’m asked for ‘Tips for Venice’, I always say ‘You should visit the island of Burano’. This is just about as far from the popular mind’s eye conception of Venice as it’s possible to get. True, there are canals … but the brightly-painted houses and the proliferation of bicycles suggest a place somewhere in the Netherlands.

Burano is also the centre for making (and, of course, selling) Venetian lace … so, if you’re female, or have a lady with you, I’d also advise keeping a firm grip on your credit card!
