The other day, my new passport arrived. I had to renew early, because, although we’re not going to Borneo till May, my old one expires in June. And, many countries, including Borneo, require at least six months of validity on your passport before they’ll let you in. So, you are, in effect, buying nine years six months of validity, rather than the ten years it says.

I was having a little debate with myself as to what colour it would be. With ‘Brexit’ just a couple of days away, a lot of people were saying that ‘we’ll get our blue passports back!’ Nope! It’s still red! It just doesn’t carry the words ‘European Union’.

Nowadays, you can save a lot of time, hassle and money by doing it online. The only glitch was they didn’t like the photo I submitted. So, I went to a camera shop in town, where they not only took a photo, but also gave a digital code I could submit, so the Passport Office could obtain the picture.

Now, there’s an old saying that, if you look like your passport picture, you need the holiday. Not any more; my picture bears a more than passing resemblance. Maybe, after all these years, I’ve found that ‘Thou Shalt Not Smile’ does not necessarily mean ‘Thou Shalt Look As If Thou Just Found a Human Finger In Thy Soup’

But, you still need ‘snail mail’ to send your old passport back, without which they won’t start to process your application. The lady at the Post Office said it rather defeated the object of doing it online … and, come to think of it, the money I saved went a long way to being eaten by the photography and postage.

So, now I’m good to go … somewhere! All that remains is to get some stamps in it, and get the newness worn off!

  1. Great post 🙂
