Turban Winding

DSC_0219

Jaipur: 26th September 2018

I assume the real purpose of these two stalwart gentlemen was to guard the two massive silver urns which, you may remember, were commissioned by a former Maharajah. He needed to take the sacred waters of the Ganges to London with him, so he could purify himself after meetings with eaters of beef.

You can see one of the urns in the background, and I’d say it would take a very determined sinner to make off with one.

Our guide persuaded the guards to give a demonstration … how to put on their complicated head-dress, which I video-ed. The only alteration I made was to edit out someone grumbling about the ‘obscenity’ of the urns when many of the Maharajah’s subjects didn’t have a vessel in which to urinate (or words to that effect!)

It made me think back to the days when I wore a uniform to work … I was thankful that all I had to do was take my cap off the peg, and put it on almost without thinking.
