‘The best way to get enjoyment from the garden is to wear a straw hat, shorts and an open-necked shirt. Hold a trowel in one hand, and a drink in the other, and tell the gardener where to dig’

This week sees the opening of the annual Chelsea Flower Show. I won’t be going; in fact, I’ve never been. But, I do enjoy seeing the frequent clips on television, and never cease to be amazed at the ‘pop up’ gardens created by the exhibitors. They only have two weeks to build them, but produce some very pleasing results. My hat is off to all those people … we’ve been working on our garden for over 20 years, and still haven’t got it quite the way we want it.

Almost everywhere we go, we usually find a garden to explore; Vancouver’s Stanley Park, Adelaide’s Himeji Gardens and Wales’ Plas Cadnant, to name but a few.

But, I think the one we like best is our garden; mainly, just because it’s ours. I remember a story told to me some time ago, about an elderly couple at a Garden Centre, who were told that, as the millionth customer, they had won a professional garden makeover.

‘It’s very kind, but we’d rather not accept’ they said ‘It just wouldn’t be our garden any more’

If I ever met these folks, I think we’d get on!

Sadly, the home garden seems to be somewhat dying off. Some gardens have been surfaced, to provide extra car parking space, but the usual is just to have the minimum work done on them to keep it fairly tidy. Nobody seems to have the time any more.

In fact, a friend once remarked that, if you see a nice garden, the householder works shifts, is retired, has retired parents who live in a flat … or Gets A Little Man In!
