A ‘Welcome Break’ and a Great Pie

Preston: 20th October 2013.

Charnock Richard Services, on the M6 motorway near Preston has just altered all my opinions about the food on British motorway service areas. They do a massive beef and ale pie which uses the same kind of pastry as a Melton Mowbray pork pie, and is absolutely delicious.

On subsequent enquiry, I found the pies are made by a firm called Dunkley’s … and this year, they won the British Pie Awards. Deservedly so, in my opinion.

And, the jolly, friendly server was a complete contrast to the surly, disinterested youth at Knutsford the last time I ate on this motorway.

The only fly in the ointment is the fact they charge for a sachet of sauce. But, it’s not much of an issue. With such a pie, who needs sauce?
