Arrival at Ålesund

First Sight of Norway

First Sight of Norway

Ålesund: 18th March 2013.

Last night was even rougher than the previous. Of course, the company can’t be held responsible for the weather. The odd loose article rolling around the cabin can usually be accepted … but television sets??!!

The receptionist expressed great concern, and relief that nobody had been hurt … and an engineer arrived in jig time, to check the set over and subsequently, secure it to the cabinet.

Breakfast was a bit disorganised; everyone was escorted to their tables, and firmly instructed not to go to the buffet; a waiter would fetch what you wanted. It seemed, though, that the waiters had little experience of this sort of thing. But, everyone I saw managed to eat their breakfast, rather than wear it and the rather naïve, Fawlty Towers-ish atmosphere was more amusing than annoying.

Gradually, the weather eased and, in the early evening, we docked at Ålesund. I stepped ashore, not to kiss the ground and give thanks for a safe arrival, but to photograph the ship, though. The exploration could wait until tomorrow … and I was determined not to let the events of the previous two days spoil the cruise.

On the quayside, I managed my first conversation with a Norwegian – an attractive, friendly female security guard. And, that’s two adjectives you don’t normally associate with security guards. I think I’m going to like Norway.
