Another Cruise: ‘Black Watch’

The advice that ‘It pays to shop around’ might sound a little clichéd, but it’s true nevertheless. If you look around the Web, or even those advertising pages of the newspaper that most people ignore, between the financial pages and the sports pages, you can find some really tasty deals, especially on travel.

So it is that we’re taking two cruises this winter; we didn’t win the Lottery, just looked around.

We’d already booked our Northern Lights cruise in March, and I was pleased to read an article in which a Norwegian meteorologist claimed that this winter’s display would be even better than last winter’s. (Normally, if a meteorologist told me it was going to get dark tonight, I’d take it with a pinch of salt … but I digress)

Then, we found out about the Baltic Christmas Markets cruise, in November. Again, it’s leaving from an English port, Southampton, so we can easily drive down there … in about half an hour! The ship is another small one, the Black Watch, operated by Fred Olsen Cruises ( ) and will be calling at Warnemunde, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Copenhagen (the only place on the itinerary I have visited before) and Kiel.

Of course, we won’t be basking in the sun on these trips … we’ve already been shopping for the winter woolies and thermal underwear. But I will, as always, be taking my camera and camcorder, so I should have something for my blog pages for a long time to come.
