The Northern Lights

We booked another cruise!

The offer was too good to pass up. Book early, and if you buy one, the second’s half price. And, we’d be able to strike two things off the ‘bucket list’ … the Norway fjords, and, hopefully, the Northern Lights. Last winter, there was the best display of the lights for a long time … will it be the same this year? If it is, everyone I know is going to get extremely tired of the photos and video.

Cruises we’ve taken previously have, between ports of call, made me think of the old song:

‘We joined the Navy to see the world/and what did we see?/we saw the sea … ‘

Not this trip, though. We’ll be doing cruises along the fjords, so we should see some pretty spectacular stuff without leaving the ship. Our ship, the Ocean Countess, has to be, of necessity, a small one, to negotiate the narrower fjords. On seeing a photograph, a seafaring friend remarked ‘That’s a SHIP, not one of those floating skyscrapers that call themselves ships’

The cruise sails from Bristol (so there aren’t any worries about baggage allowance; we’ll be driving there, so can take as much stuff as we like, within reason) on the 15th March, and will take 15 days, during which we will see:

Stavanger, Alesund, Narvik, Alta, Tromso, Andalsnes and Bergen.

And (fingers firmly crossed!) see the Northern Lights!

  1. Seeing the Northern lights would is on my list! That first image is gorgeous!

    • I can’t take the credit for that one; that image came to me from the cruise company. But, I’m hoping to get something like it! Thanks for coming by!

      Best,

      Keith (Travelrat)

  2. Awesome sky!!! Cheers Nonoy Manga

  3. OMG. I would love to see the Norwegian fjords – mostly so I could say “Fjords” all the time, but also because the beauty of the surroundings would be stunning. That will be a very special trip!

    • You don’t have to go all that far to see fjords (pronounced ‘fee-ords’) … I believe New Zealand has some, too? Meanwhile, more preparation; I’m in ‘character map’ learning how to type ‘Ålesund’ and ‘Tromsø’ !

  4. As you say – too good an offer to miss – enjoy 🙂
