Glenelg Tram: Video

29th March 2012.

The reason for my visit to Glenelg was to video the trams. From previous visits, I knew of the old brown ‘Rattlers’ which, at the time of my last visit in 2006, were being replaced. Now, they’re gone completely, having been replaced by sleek, modern, fairly quiet vehicles. The line has been extended, too, to North Terrace, and a little way along the Port Road.

The eventual plan is to extend the line even further, to the West Lakes Shopping Centre, thence to Port Adelaide.

I’m reminded a little of the city in Northern England, where they proposed a light electric railway into the centre from the suburbs. But, where to put this railway? It was suggested that maybe the ornamental gardens in the central reserve of the carriageway might serve?

An old City councillor then said Ah! You mean, where the old trams used to run?’
