Adelaide … First Look (for a while)

Adelaide: 26th March 2012.

I went into Adelaide this morning to pick up my hire car and take some photographs. The early morning light was excellent, although some areas gave the impression of being ‘concrete canyons’, with the towering newer buildings completely eclipsing and dwarfing some of the older ones.

I’m reminded a little of the kind of Hollywood film, where the characters band succeed in saving an old brownstone from developers, and it remains, completely dwarfed by the skyscrapers around it.

It seemed, sometimes, that direct sunlight rarely reaches street level, but maybe, at times of the year when shade is valued, that’s not altogether a bad thing.

To see the best of the older buildings, it’s best to go to the southern half of the city centre. But, it’s still a little incongruous to see a fine traditional building festooned with banners with oriental characters advertising a Chinese restaurant or something.

  1. Hi Keith,
Yes it is a shame that the newer building totally block out some of the older ones which in a lot of cases are much nicer I feel.
    Great photos. 🙂

  2. Beautiful city!

  3. I agree with Mags, I think it’s a shame too. That’s progress, I guess. That said though, it really is a lovely city!

    • I guess that, since the parklands surrounding the square mile of the CBD are inviolate, the only way they can go is up!
