Bantry House

September 17th, 2011

Bantry House (which is also a hotel) could be dismissed as like just about any other ‘stately home’ … except for the view over Bantry Bay. That, alone, is almost worth the price of the entry fee. Also, there are extensive gardens, and I wondered if the slight air of dilapidation and neglect was because they couldn’t afford the gardener to come around as often, or was carefully contrived. Whichever, I rather like the effect, for I don’t like gardens to be too barbered and orderly.

The interior furnishings didn’t do a lot for me, and the people who lived there weren’t particularly well-known outside their own circle. One particular resident was called John White, which I only remembered because it was also my great-great grandfather’s name. But, Bantry House is still worth a visit if you’re in the area. Provided, of course, that it’s not raining.

  1. It is a stunning place. The middle photo looking out onto the water is just gorgeous. What a view. WOW.

  2. Hi,
What a gorgeous place for a home, and wow what a home, it looks huge, the grounds look very well kept, and the view is to die for, I love it. 🙂
