Surfers’ Paradise Monorail

(I’m a little early with this, but don’t know if I’ll have time to post in the morning)

Surfers’ Paradise: 5th August 2010

On the way back from the whale-watching cruise, we had to pass through Surfers’ Paradise. If you’re a regular reader of my posts, you’ve probably realised I have a pretty poor opinion of the place. It’s no longer a ‘surfer’s paradise’, and I feel it ought to be renamed … Las Vegas on Sea, or something.

Since I don’t surf and don’t gamble (well, apart from buying the odd ticket in the Irish State Lottery), Surfers’ Paradise doesn’t hold much attraction for me. Except ….

The Monorail!

I think this is the first monorail I’ve ever seen outside a theme park, and I just had to ride it. It connects a shopping centre with (wouldn’t you know it!) a casino. The video I took wasn’t very satisfactory, so I won’t embed it. If you really want to see it, it’s at http://www.flickr.com/photos/31258795@N00/5466170936/in/photostream. The picture I ripped from the video footage isn’t  very good, either.

But, I promise to do better, when we visit Seaworld in next Wednesday’s post.

  1. Hi Keith,
I couldn’t agree more with you about Surfers Paradise, it has been going to the dogs so to speak for a long time, and even the people living there are complaining about how things have changed over the years, and believe it or not it is getting worse.
I’m pretty sure the Casino paid to put the monorail in, and it has turned out to be a big hit from the time it first started.

  2. I’m not a fan of Surfer’s either but the monorail does looks good. Such fun to ride on!
