Top 10 Travel Experiences … So Far

Ten Best Travel Experiences … So Far

  1. Watching the eruption of Stromboli at 4 am from the deck of a cruise ship in the Straits of Messina.
  2. Walking the Samaria Gorge in Crete, a year to the day after I got admitted to hospital, wondering if I’d ever walk any distance again.
  3. Riding a camel in Wadi Rum; a complete contrast to a 10-minute lurch along a beach on the back of a beast that’s seen better days.
  4. The Kuranda Scenic Railway in Queensland, and never was the word ‘scenic’ more appropriate.
  5. Attending an open-air André Rieu concert in the Vrijthof, in his home town of Maastricht. He’s a great performer anywhere, but his home ground adds a little extra.
  6. Getting ‘up close and personal’ with a gigantic Maori Wrasse on the Great Barrier Reef … and trying not to think how many fish suppers we could get from it.
  7. Rising early on a river cruise boat; watching the sun rise over the Nile and hearing a dozen voices singing the morning Call to Prayer.
  8. Floating in the Dead Sea. It really is impossible to sink. And, you can have lunch in the lowest restaurant on earth.
  9. Seeing the Edinburgh Tattoo live. I’m not Scottish, but whenever I hear the pipes, I think ‘Thank God they’re on our side!’
  10. Standing on a high pass in the Haut Savoie watching the morning mist clear like a curtain being drawn.
