Woodman, Woodman, Spare That Tree!

This is our tree. It stands near the junction of Salisbury Street and Flower Lane, in Amesbury. As you can see, it’s a great place to meet up and, if you wish, hang out and watch the world go by. Maybe it’s not developing as well as was first expected, but, so what? It’s healthy, and it looks good.

But, our Council, who have somewhat of a reputation of fixing that which isn’t broken, have decreed that it’s got to go, in the interests of ‘improvements’. And, what’s to replace it? A planter with flowers (for Pete’s sake) and, for a couple of weeks in the year, an illuminated Christmas tree.

Is the proposed planter going to provide a place for the old folks to sit and gossip? I doubt it.

I’m sorry for this vent about a purely local issue, but I’ve got to take this stand. It’s our tree, and we like it … and I thought the Council were elected to represent US.

  1. Things like that really get on my goat. So it’s not just Councils in Australia that suffer from short-sightedness? The tree is providing such a community service. Oh, I hope you manage to save it.

  2. Well, you see the yellow ribbons on the tree? If you go into the nearby hairdresser’s, and sign the petition, they’ll give you a piece of ribbon to tie on the tree.

That picture was taken last week; you should see it now!

  3. The petition and the letters to the paper worked!

    WE SAVED THE TREE!

(Now, I hope the Council will tidy up the surrounds, and give the benches a lick of varnish)
