The Nine Line

I came across Wally Klein’s request for information on a bulletin board I frequent. He wanted contributions for his website, The Nine Line ( which is, or rather, will be about … just that. Route No. 9 on bus, train, tram and ferry services around the world.

The site’s very much ‘under construction’ at the moment, but one of the routes shown is the No 9 tram of the Hague Transport Services (HTM). Although you’ll see my name on it, I just made the suggestion and sent a photo; Wally wrote the article from the information I’d given him, and from what he’d gleaned from the Web.

Unfortunately, our ‘local’ Nine Line is on the other side of the next county, and Wally doesn’t pay … normally, I’m a firm believer in the old Yorkshire saying ‘If ivver tha does owt for nowt, do it for thissen!’ But, in this case, I had the stuff handy, anyway. I gathered the material when I went to The Hague on a press trip in 2006. The magazine I planned to write the article for went out of business, before it was published, and I’ve felt rather bad about it ever since.

I did finally place it though; you can see it at

And, on my travels, I intend looking out for more ‘Routes No 9’. Who knows where they might lead? How about you? Is there a No. 9 near you that you’d like to tell Wally about?

  1. What fun. I believe there might be a No.9 tram going into the city. I’m going to check it out.

  2. I’d forgotten about the trams and the monorail! It seems that the bus services, though, all have three-figure numbers, and I don’t think the harbour ferries have numbers at all ???

I thought the ‘vaporetti’ in Venice might be a possibility but, according to my time-table, ‘there is no Route 9’ (Thinks of the Monty Python ‘G’day, Bruce!’ sketch)
