Apples

Bilpin, NSW. 15th December 2007

In retrospect, I’m kicking myself. We went to the Blue Mountains three times, and passed through Bilpin each time, and didn’t stop. The fourth time, we passed through about lunchtime, and we did!

Now, Bilpin prides itself on its fruit, particularly apples, and all along the road were orchards, with, occasionally, little places selling apples, and apple pies … and apple juice! That’s my second-favourite drink of choice when I’m the ‘designated driver’; the first favourite is grapefruit juice, but the doctor said I should take it easy on that, as it counteracts the good effects of my medicine if I drink too much of it.

But, the Bilpin apple juice! All I can say about it is the ‘Man from Del Monte’ would definitely say ‘Yes!’

We stopped at a place called ‘Tutti Fruitti’ … yes, I know it’s a kind of ice-cream, and they made superlative ice-cream; every bit as good as Italian ice cream, and that’s saying something. And, I think it’s the only place in Australia I asked for a pie, and was asked what kind I wanted … I chose the bolognaise flavour.

Tutti Fruitti wasn’t only a café; it was also an orchard and a rose garden, but you need to make an appointment to see these. But, don’t just take my word for it; check them out at http://www.tuttifruitti.com.au

Later on, I was speaking to a retired fruit farmer, and remarked I hadn’t seen any cider for sale. Oh, we make that, he said. But, maybe it’s so good, they keep it all for themselves?

  2. The Bilpin apple juice is definitely the best but it is not always easy to get it in the city. When I do get it I really enjoy it. Quite delicious!

  3. I used to think nothing could beat the taste of the ‘apfelsaft’ (can’t remember the brand name) we used to buy in Germany.

    Until now!

I’m intrigued about the cider … I never saw any on sale, and I’m wondering if, maybe, they do a ‘bootleg’ brew for their own use only?
