Neolithic Week

Red Lion

I suppose I could call this week ‘Neolithic Week’. On Wednesday, I went to have a look round the dig at Durrington Walls. There’s not much to see yet, but one of the archaeologists gave a vivid description of how it might have been. On Saturday, a re-enactment group will try to demonstrate how life was in those times. I hope I can make it, but my daughter and grandchildren are coming today, and they may have other ideas.

Thursday, I went up to Avebury. I’ve been commissioned by a Japanese magazine to write an article about it, and wanted to visit the Alexander Keiller Museum, to fill in a few gaps.

While I was there, I took a picture of the Red Lion pub, because several people have expressed an interest in our old buildings, and I’ll be writing more about them later.

  1. I have heard about the stone circles at Avebury but have never seen them. Amazing footage! I’m off to visit my archaeologist mate to see what he can tell me about them. Also loved the pub and the old double decker bus. I grew up in the UK and it was lovely to see one of them again. Thanks, Keith.

  2. I don’t think Wilts & Dorset would like to hear you calling their buses ‘old’ :)

Although some are 10-20 years old, their argument is ‘They’re diesels, and just nicely run in!’

There’s an entry called ‘Madrid Bus Ride’, and some accompanying video somewhere in the blog … and there will be more: I love those open-top buses!

    Best,

    Keith

  3. Another way to ’see’ Avebury is, if you have Google Earth, go to 51°25′42.50″ N 1°51′14.66″ W

  4. You read my mind. I’ve been checking out my old stomping ground in Glasgow all morning on Google Earth (feeling a bit teary now) and now I’m off to Avebury. Google Earth really is an amazing facility. You’ve got my son interested in standing stones now so it looks like we’ll be researching it all weekend. LOL!
